A friend in Scotland (not that that is significant, of course) pointed me to this brilliant history of the English language in ten minutes. It just so happens that I am also currently poking around in David Crystal’s book The Story of English in 100 Words. Just enjoy this sprint through the language.

If you like David Crystal, Nick, you should try his book The Stories of English [http://tinyurl.com/cn2th9k], which features some great material on why the dialect of the South East, used by people in power in London, Oxford, Cambridge and Canterbury, became the prestige form and the basis for Standard English. That’s why Caxton ended up using choosing it over any other dialect. Eyren and chips anyone?
